May Is Coeliac Awareness Month - Let's Raise Awareness! 💚

Every May, Coeliac Awareness Month comes around to raise awareness for a condition that affects more people than you might think. In the UK alone, around 1 in 100 people are living with coeliac disease, yet many remain undiagnosed.

At Innabox, raising awareness for disabilities and hidden illnesses such as coeliac disease and gluten intolerance is incredibly important to us. Through thoughtful, relatable products, we aim to help spark conversations, reduce stigma, and show a nod of support to others.

What is Coeliac Disease?

Coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune condition where the body reacts to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. When someone with coeliac disease eats gluten, their immune system attacks the lining of the small intestine, which causes damage and then prevents them from being able to properly absorb nutrients.

It’s important to understand that coeliac disease is not an allergy or a dietary preference. It’s a lifelong medical condition that requires strict management of a gluten free diet.

Common Symptoms of Coeliac Disease to Look Out For:

One of the biggest challenges with coeliac disease is that symptoms can vary hugely from person to person. Some people experience obvious digestive issues, while others may have subtle or seemingly unrelated symptoms.

Some common coeliac symptoms include:

  • Bloating, stomach pain, or digestive discomfort
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Anaemia or nutrient deficiencies
  • Headaches or brain fog
  • Skin issues or rashes
  • Unexplained weight changes

In fact, many people don’t realise they have coeliac disease at all! It’s estimated that hundreds of thousands of people in the UK are undiagnosed, often living with symptoms without clear answers.

Why Coeliac Awareness Matters

Despite it being pretty common, coeliac disease is still vastly misunderstood. Many people assume gluten free diets are a choice, but for coeliacs, avoiding gluten is essential for their health.

Even tiny traces of gluten can cause harm, and cross contamination is a real risk in shared kitchens or food environments.

By raising awareness we can help:

  • Encourage earlier diagnosis
  • Promote safer food practices
  • Reduce stigma around gluten free diets
  • Create more inclusive spaces for everyone

How You Can Help Support the Gluten Free Community

Supporting someone with coeliac disease doesn’t have to be complicated! Small actions can make a huge difference to people:

  • Take gluten free requirements seriously
  • Learn about cross contamination risks
  • Offer clearly labelled gluten free options
  • Be inclusive when planning food or events
  • Listen and learn from lived experiences

And of course, supporting small businesses that advocate for awareness is a great place to start!
